After defeating the Spanish compound government, Filipinos were forced to wage another war, this time against the US invading forces. This ti me it was a vicious racist war that resulted in the death of at least 1.4 million Filipinos from the actual fighting and from war-related starvation and affection (San Juan). From the end of WWII to the early 60s, most of the Filipino migrants were Filipinos in the US armed forces and their families.
